This year conference will be no exception. Our opening will be carried out by the Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee himself and subject to confirmation our speakers for the event will be published here.

Professor Tony F Chan

Prof Tony F Chan, BS, MS, PhD. assumed the presidency of HKUST on 1 September 2009.

Prof Chan received his BS and MS from Caltech and PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University (1978). He taught at Yale before joining UCLA as Professor of Mathematics in 1986. At UCLA, he served as Mathematics Department Chair (1997-2000), Director of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (2000-2001) and Dean of Physical Science (2001-2006). From 2006-2009, he served as Assistant Director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the US National Science Foundation and managed research funding of over US$1B a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical sciences and material science.

He is an elected Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served on the US National Committee for Mathematics and was one of five US representatives to the International Union of Mathematicians in 2006. He is one of ISI's most cited mathematicians.

Professor Huang Chu Ren

at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

He received his PhD in linguistics from Cornell University in 1987 and has since played a central role in developing Chinese language resources and in leading the fields of Chinese corpus and computational linguistics.

Most recently elected Vice President of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities

In chronological order, he directed or co-directed the construction of the CKIP lexicon and ICG Grammar (80k entries, including 40k verbs with detailed PAS annotation), Sinica Corpus (10 million words, the first tagged balance corpus of Chinese), Sinica Treebank, Academia Sinica Bilingual Ontological WordNet (direct mapping from Princeton WordNet to Chinese with Translation), Chinese WordSketch, Tagged Chinese Gigaword Corpus (tagging of the raw corpus from LDC consisting of 1,400 million characters from China, Taiwan, and Singapore), Hantology (an ontology based on the semantic classification of Chinese characters) and Chinese WordNet (over 20,000 senses currently).

Markus Joytak Shaw

Markus Joytak Shaw
Markus Shaw is a member of WWF’s International’s Board of Trustees and its Treasurer, as well as President and Trustee (and former Chairman) of WWF-Hong Kong.


Following a history degree from Cambridge University, he spent six years as a corporate lawyer in London, Singapore and Hong Kong before joining the family business in 1992. He is a Director of his family’s investment firm.


He has wide experience in the investment management world and has had active management involvement in many portfolio companies, principally in the fields of finance, real estate and media and entertainment.


He has co-founded NGOs in the fields of better urban planning (“Designing Hong Kong”) and air pollution (“Clean Air Network”), and also sits on the boards and acts as advisor to a number of philanthropic organizations and academic bodies. He was a member of the Hong Kong Government’s Advisory Council on the Environment from 2004 to 2008.


An outspoken advocate for conservation, he is a regular newspaper columnist and speaker on the subject at many fora.


He is married with three children, and has a keen interest in literature, history, music and photography.
